Cherry, The autumn blooming Clematis do bloom on new wood. I prune mine
down to about 4-6 inches leaving 2 good sets of buds in February or March.
I have many feet of new growth on C. 'Mrs. Robert Brydon' already. It is a
marvelous vine with hundreds of small blue flowers that fade to white with
age. I grow it up and through a large Viburnam bodnatense 'Pink Dawn' and
people think the shrub is in bloom from late August to October :) Marilyn
