Jeanne, I think you did that just right. I deadhead my perennials, too. If
I want them to set seed I quit deadheading them toward the end of their
season.

No, I think they should be just as viable.

Maybe that's the problem. Perhaps the adult plants have banned innocent
young seedlings from your R-rated garden! ;>)
