I'm behind on posts, but there was a discussion about fragrance and
I wanted to add a couple of comments:
The pale blue woodland phlox (Phlox divaricata) that grows well in
partial shade (in my zone 5 garden, anyway) is extremely fragrant.
Another wonderful scent is that of a shrub called Philadelphius; the
hardy Minnesota Snowflake isn't fragrant, however, but there is another
species that is--and I have a dwarf version of it that gets only 4-5 feet
high and has one of those tropical, sweet, white-flower languid scents.
Some of the David Austin English roses, such as Heritage, Mary Rose,
the Prince, Tradescant, and Gertrude Jekyll, are wonderfully scented with
the old tea rose or damask rose scents.
Since the daffodils are blooming like crazy here now and definitely
have my attention, it reminds me that Geranium, one of the Tazetta hybrids
that is hardy enough for zone 5--white perianth and tiny scarlet cup,
flowering in clusters--is exquisitely fragrant; just one in a mixed daff
bouquet makes the whole house smell great.
Don't forget the scent of hyacinths of course, speaking of bulbs,
and there are even some tulips that have a sweet smell.
I don't know if I have a good place to plant them here, but in a
former garden I always grew the annual vine of Moonflower (ipomoea, like
morning glory family) with its huge pure white flowers opening only at night
and smelling wonderful.
The daphnes (especially somerset and Carol Mackie) are terrific
fragrance flowers too, along with buddleias (butterfly bushes), peonies,
lilacs (of course), lilies of the valley, and many of the dianthus,
especially small alpine types like alwoodii.
Susan in Urbana, Illinois, zone 5b, who's enjoying daffs, squills,
bloodroot, aubrieta, arabis, alyssum, anemone blanda, pasque flowers,
turkestanica tulips, pulchella violacea tulips, and fritillaria meleagris in
bloom today!
