One way I avoid damping off is to simply not keep the medium you're using
too moist. I let it dry a little inbetween waterings. Next, I use a small
desk fan to provide some circulation around my flats. It's hooked up to a
timer along with my lights. I have a small operation -- only 8 flats and
scattered pots in my basement.
I've learned about the above through trail and error. You can get tired of
your seedlings dying and will try just about anything! I've had no more
problems with damping off since.
