Re: New Plants

Hardening off refers to acclimating the plants. many perennials with
lush growth this time of the year in the Midwest are grown in
greenhouses in order to force them for early sales. If these plants are
taken from warm conditions and immediately exposed to windy or cold
conditions there can be some damage or foliage discoloration.

The best perennials are those which are grown in cold frames and are
acclimated already to the cold. Same with some types of annuals.
Unfortunately now days everyone wants things in bloom the first part of
May and alot of annuals which can withstand some cold temps are grown
lush and soft in a greenhouse. Looks nice to a consumer, but the short
rosetted petunias without blooms are far superior than those with a
single stem and one large bloom.
