Hello Val,
I have Japanese Painted Ferns in several locations. Given time and right
conditions they will spread themselves around in the garden. One of the
locations is on an embankment inside the drip line of a mature cedar tree.
If they have rocks to get their roots under during the hottest part of the
summer you would be surprised where you can grow them. Same with many other
ferns. I think the trick is to keep them moist and mulched the first full
year until they can get a good root system out into the soil.
Also we all tend to get a concept in our minds when someone says "fern"
that is not always applicable. Such as the little Hairy Lip Fern. It
actually prefers somewhat dry rocky soil in a bit of a more open position
than many others. Some ferns will survive, but not thrive, without their
extra moisture.
Kind of like people and prejudices ... huh? Easy way to think, but better
if one looks past the label.
