Devon,
I use the following edgings in full/part sun, zone 6a:
heuchera (coral bells)
alchemilla mollis (lady's mantle)
campanula carpatica
chrysanthemum parthenium (feverfew)
coreopsis verticillata (my favorite is 'Moonbeam')
dianthus (I use 'Bath's Pink')
lavender
calamintha
nepeta
veronica (I like 'Red Fox')
various daylilies (especially 'Stella d'Oro')
Annuals (for non-stop color; I vary my usage year-to-year):
begonias
coleus
petunia
zinnia (the 'Lilliput' line is small)
ageratum
vinca rosea
impatiens
petunias
salvia
marigolds
Hope this short list helps a little.
