Mary,

I have the campanula carpatica and yes, it requires well-draining soil. It
did not do well at all in clay for me; I really had to amend a large area
of soil to get it to thrive. I have some in full sun and some that's
partially shaded by a large rose bush. The ones by the bush grow better
than those in full sun. However, I must say that I feel this had more to
do with water than sun. If in full sun, be sure to keep watered. In
partial sun, it can get by with less. Our summers are hot and humid so for
me, this has always figured in the gardening equation somewhere.
