Gosh Elle, we're neighbors. It was a very wet winter, but all of my
lavender survived. Do you amend your soil or is it pure, soggy, Oregon
clay?
I do amend my beds every year with several inches of compost and add compost
to the planting holes of plants as well. Most of my lavenders are about 2'
tall and some are 8 years old. I do cut them back every spring to a few
inches of hard wood and let them bud out all over again to control
size/shape.
This year I am edging a tricky area of my garden where I have a narrow strip
between fence and sod so the grass won't run into something else. It does
not get lots of summer watering (no hoses there), and I put in about 10
plants of Hidcote lavender (15").
The thing I like about lavender as an edger is you can mow it! I edge my
beds once a year, and after that, let things billow over, etc., and just mow
for tidiness. CLARIFICATION: I don't mow over the top of the lavender, but
as it billows out I can mow over the stray branches. Makes the mower smell
wonderful too!

For mine is a little old fashioned garden where the flowers come
together to praise the Lord and teach all who look upon them to do
likewise.
