Deadheading buddleia

Now the questions is "is it
> necessary to dead head these bushes in order to prolong the blooming
> season?" I have been doing so and they continue to bloom but just maybe
> I am wasting my time and they would bloom with out my help.

I don't know if it's *necessary*, but it seems to keep them blooming and
gets rid of those ugly brown flower heads. I snip them off at the base
of the panicles (is that the right terminology?) and two more heads seem
to spring from the junction in no time.

I'm north of you, so I stop deadheading about half way through September
(so as not to encourage new growth that may get frost damaged). But at
this time of the year, I do it daily!

Slightly off topic, my neighbor took some wonderful pictures of flowers
in my garden. I've mounted them on my gardening links page (address in
sig line) - the datura flower is especially lovely.
