Re: Baptisia 'Purple Smoke'

Dear Janet,

I've never heard of Baptisia 'Blue Smoke' but I do grow and enjoy B.
'Purple Smoke,' a chance seedling found by Rob Gardner, head propagator
at the NCBG in Chapel Hill, NC. It is a cross between B. australis and B.
alba. As such, it has smokey violet flowers and gorgeous charcoal
stems. My four-year-old plant is 4 feet tall and has 20 to 30 flower
stems, which are held well above the foliage. Mine is in full sun in
amended clay soil. My plant came from Kim Hawks of Niche Gardens.

Best,
Julie Finn Zone 7b and 10a
