In the latest NEW SCIENTIST magazine, Liz Fletcher's article concerning
plants was interesting. She discussed companion gardening and identified
"guardian" and "doctor" species that can be interplanted to form a
beneficial relationship. Gardeners have long suspected that plant roots
secrete beneficial chemicals. Companion planting has been practiced for
centuries and many books have been written on the subject.
One item of note is that she claims that the only way to grow rust-free
hollyhocks is to plant wormwood next to them. Has anyone found this to be
true or is willing to experiment with it?
