Well, if you feel so inclined, you can read without guilt!  The 
"loosestrife" featured in BH&G is lysimachia ciliata purpurea.  The article 
makes reference to the environmental concerns about lythrum, explains the 
difference, and points out that this is one hazard of using common names.
