It's possible you can set up filters even if "perennials" is not in the subject line. I use Eudora, and you can specify where the filtering word occurs. I have the "To" heading selected and "perennials" as the filter.
All of my maillists have their own folder, and incoming messages are filtered directly into the appropriate folder. That way if I only have time to read perennials, I just go to that folder, and don't have to wade through all the other messages.
After downloading and filtering my mail, I end up with two or three spam messages in my In box, which are easy to delete as a group.
Don't know if that's possible with other mail programs, though.

Due to an ever increasing amount of incoming 'junk' mail,I am considering filtering all my lists into folders,those recieved without an appropriate folder would be much easier detected as the dreaded-unwelcome junk type.....
