You can take advantage of these straight stems if the plant is young
enough (works best if from seed) to work up Rose of Sharon (Hybiscus
syriacus) as a single stem into a nice, small tree. Here is the one
in my front yard:

The bloodline (or maybe I should say "sapline") of this tree is
interesting. The original seeds were given to me over 40 years ago
by an elderly Czechoslovakian woman who had worked in her younger
days as a tightrope walker in the circus. It is easy to work up as a
tree if you start with seedlings and can bloom as early as 3 years
from seed.
