Hello
Being an avid environmental gardener I shrink at the word Round-Up. There
are many dangers to using the product in any lawn or garden. I teach
children's groups and I always give the analogy of a mother feeding their
children a bowl of poison. (Always evokes a throat-choking simulation of
silly laughter.) I imagine what happens to the weeds when they are drowned
with the product and the visual image of suffering always makes me shudder.
Not to mention the lasting effect it leaves in the soil, regardless of what
the label reads.
The best answer for your problem has already been given, the scalping and
newspaper mulch. This need not deter you from starting your planting though.
Just use the newspaper mulch around the plants you put in now. There are no
easy solutions when choosing to be concerned for the world we live in. All
those chemical products were created to make life simpler but they are really
making our lives more complicated.
I wish everyone would be as concerned about using Round-Up as you are, most
just reach for the bottle and forget it.
Good Luck,
Jennifer White
