I deleted the original email by going too fast for my brain to catch up, but 
did I see that you said you couldn't get them to blooming size from bulbs? 
This seems very strange because I have no trouble getting them to bloom the 
same year from just the bulbs (or are they corms?). In fact most people 
growing them here in Canada do just that, since they are not considered 
reliably hardy here (although they can be with good deep snow cover and very 
sharp drainage).
Mine are about half way through their bloom period right now as a matter of 
fact, and I am in a new garden and just planted them this spring.  Try 
treating them like glads and dahlias -lifting them for the winter and 
storing them in vermiculite or whatever.
