HI Donna,
I do most of my dividing this time of year to the first week in September. AND I make sure everything that has been out of the ground gets hand watered for 1-2 weeks after. If I do major surgery (lots of divisions), I'll cut the leaves back to about 6-10 inches and water until I see fresh growth.
BUT - I divide sale plants from May to September and have never lost a plant. What I don't do anymore, is plant new to me material after Labor Day in the ground, instead they stay in holding pots and are buried in chopped leaves/the compost heap.
And I have to get busy with some new plants that arrived yesterday.
Cheryl
Cheryl,
When do you divide yours? I was planning on it a few weeks after blooming. Got a bunch that need it.
Donna
I have NEVER whacked all the foliage down - cleaned it, trimmed it, but never to the ground mid-season. I clean it in the fall and in the spring. DiSabato's book might be talking about the Deep South and evergreen daylilies where it might be useful. Daylilies can really take a beating, but that seems over the top!
