Thanks Lynn, misery loves company :). I wondered about water drops
intensifying the light on those dark purple petals myself.

Yes, I have had the white spots on 'Nicky' phlox as well. I thought
it was caused by water droplets....just my own theory. I had one plant come
out a light purple...don't know if it was mismarked or what.
