Lynn: If you really want a true contrast with purple you might want to think
about purple foliaged plants. Perilla is a seedy plant around here but I
wouldn't do without it in the garden. It's a wonderful filler plant and the
foliage is a deep, dark purple. If you keep the blooms nipped (as you would
a Coleus) the seedlings are minimal. I generally do not allow the plant to
keep a bloom until late summer, just to ensure a few seedlings. In the
spring when the seedlings pop up, they are easily selected out......if you
get too cold, you may just want to collect the seed and start a few each
spring. I always keep the darkest of the seedlings.
Another wondeful dark foliage plant is the Canna Australia - beautiful rich
dark foliage.
I love this color combo too.
