You're most welcome, Steve. Now, is the arboretum's Bonsai
collection deciduous? If so, I can see them overwintering in the
dark...Actually, if kept chilled, think many plants can handle low or
no light. Once knew a garden center that piled all their unsold
stock in a huge mound; covered it with black plastic for winter and
it emerged just fine. Have wintered many things in my coldframe
covered with black plastic and rugs. But, key here, I think, is
temperature.
Cannas will overwinter fine in no light as they go
semi-dormant...again, if temps are cool.
Since my Pennisetum lives in a pot with Helichrysum petiolatum and a
purple leaf Heuchera - both of whom are evergreen - it was in light,
so was not really dormant. I did not cut it back; just removed the
blooming stems. Could be if cut back it would go dormant and take no
light...just do not know.
