Re: streaks on dark colors: daylilies

Thrips (plural form - there is never a single thrip) :-) are about 1/50 inch long and are a major pest of indoor and outdoor ornamentals as well as citrus/peach/grape and other fruits (severe infestations cause blossom drop) You can see them if you use a hand lens but without a lens they'll appear as tiny threads on the leaf or hidden down in the bud where they hatch from eggs. I'm not sure that I've ever seen leftover wings - given the worst damage is caused by wingless young and they develop wings only as adults to mate/lay eggs etc. I suggest that whoever wrote about leftover wings may (and I stress "may") have misidentified the detritus given the relative size of the wings but then again - stranger things have happened in nurseries. :-)

They seldom cause economic damage but cosmetic damage can be extensive (in other words, your plant will seldom die as a result of thrip damage but the blooms might be wrecked) ;-)

Do thrips damage only flowers? Indoors?
