Nearly all except Darlingtonia are hardy on zone 5 with mulch. Most
everyone mulches them in the winter and lets the water level drop a bit.
Fred Case's plants are at the edge of a large pond surrounded by forest not
on a hilltop surrounded by open fields. A friend of mine is starting a bog
on a lihhtop surrounded by cornfields. If you start a bog you should build
it in September so it will be ready to plant in May or June. It really
takes all winter to get the peat moss saturated. Sarracenia needs hot sunny
weather to grow well so planting is best done when the weather has warmed
up.
I use reverse osmosis water on my bog. In order to use rain water it has to
rain. The unit attaches to a hose and has two outlets. The waste water has
four times as much as the filtered water. I have one that attaches to a
buried hose that ges to the bog with a 1/2 inch tubing on the end that I can
move around. The waste water is a 25' 1/4" tube that I move around to
places that need deep soaking. The water is ok for general watering. It
can produce up to 200 gallons per day.
Sarracenia flava is the easiest and most vigorous, 2-3 ft tall.
