Hi Gene:
I bought my "pennsylvania at Westons up in Hopkinton,Ma last October,
wintered it over in my veggie garden and transplanted to a permanent(?) home
this spring. I believe it's a Weston hybrid. The Mezitts, owners of Westons
were responsible for Rhody "PJM" "OLGA" and others Her's what they say
about 'pennsylvania' "Summer flowering. Very late blooming. Delicate pink
flowers the third week of July. Each flower has an orange eye and remains
colorful with a touch of sweet fruity fragrance into early August. Wide
growing, slow, and upright. Small rounded apple green foliage turns a
distinctive coppery yellow before dropping in autumn." This beauty is
nothing like the Exbury types; more like an evergreen type.
You might also check out Carlsons Gardens in Salem, NY just a few miles above
White Plains. I know they have Polly Hill " West Tisbury" azaleas which are
late June ground cover types getting only 12/15 inches tall but eventually
spreding 5/6 feet. great over a wall. And con't forget a blueberry bush or
two; great in the woodland garden, tho they prefer sun, they'll be ok, just
don't expect many berries.
