Ack Althea! Don't burn poison ivy and oak! The fumes can have
really bad effect on lungs...like you can get PI of the lungs!! NOT
good! Best to encase in plastic trash bags and send to dump.
All of them need to be dug out or pull as much of the underground
root system as poss - actually, do not know about Kudzu as do not
have it.
Don't use herbicides as a rule, but think either RoundUP or one of
those labeled as brush killers can be painted on the cut stems to
kill the underground parts - again, no clue if that would work on
Kudzu. You do have to make a judgment about how entangled the roots
of the vines are with the roots of the trees and anything else you
may want.
I find it much easier and more effective to pull those vines when the
soil is moist...so if it's dry where you are, water the area well the
day before you plan to pull...you'll find you get a lot more root
with a lot less effort out of soft ground.
If the thorny ones you have weren't variegated and had very stiff
vines - almost like bamboo, then I'd say you had one of the
catbriers...have not seen a variegated form of this, but it could
exist...they are tough to get rid of; underground stems just like
bamboo travel for long distances. If they are soft stemmed, have no
idea what they are.
The honeysuckle is very likely Lonicera japonica 'Halliana' - Hall's
honeysuckle. A real pest despite its fragrant flowers. I find
pulling works, but you may have to do it more than once...you gotta
get those roots out.
