That is lighter and more delicate than my Franz Shubert. Too bad about the
mildew, I like that color. Putting aside the drought for a moment, the
August garden is not a garden without the summer Phlox.
I would throw in one more plant here. A lot of people thing boxwoods are
needy of moisture as they grow all over the UK in drippy wet places. I have
dozens of them here (good luck with cuttings) and they are green, clipped to
look as though I have something more elegant than I really have and never
need any water. They will grow in the worst places and not show any wilt or
browing of leaves. A boxwood is absolutely drought tolerant so if you need
some green stuff in the garden in late summer, add a few. At least three
species of boxwood are hardy in zone 4. The dwarf Alberta spruce is also
extremely drought tolerant. Both of these plants can grow with perennials as
they stay small for a long time.
