shady plant suggestions?

In my continuing garden saga .... :)

I now have an area (yeah, part of the new berm) that is shady. Most
times I only see my yard in the morning and evening (that dreaded work).
I spent the day out there, and realized that the purple leaf plum tree
is really creating a lot of shade there. Since moving here in sun, kinda
lost track of shade plants for the last 5 years. So we are talking an
area of 20 ft long X 12 ft wide. The edges will have some sun, but not
for long. It is not a wooded area, one tree!... plants will be under and
around this tree mostly to the west of it, with some wandering to the
south and north.. I am in zone 5, IL so looking for hardy here, was
clay, now black dirt... Looking for something different. Don't want to
do the hosta type thing. Would like something blooming there always...
so need, spring, summer and fall plants. Also this in the pinky
garden... shades of red, pink, mauve, and white in the neighborhood. So
all you shade gardeners-- what should I plant? Gees-- not asking for
much am I... :(

And for those thinking-- he buried the tree in this berm... it was a
continuation of a berm.. tree still at same planting depth it always
was... or that would have been the last straw :)

Thanks in advance for any suggestions!

Donna
