The native lobelia syphilitica, blue-flowered, grows abundantly in my woods.
I also have a damp spot at the base of a slope beside the drive up to my barn
door. One year a couple of these lobelias appeared there and then they spread
all around by seed. This year, however, the population is greatly
diminished--must have been something to do with the combination of a hot dry
summer last year and a mild winter maybe? They haven't grown very tall yet
nor have they started blooming, although L. 'Ruby Slippers' is showing some
color. Now that we've had some rain, after total drought in June, July, and
half of August, I expect they'll spurt up and bloom.
I once had a lobelia cultivar 'Shrimp Salad'--it lasted for several years but
seems to have died this year. Anyone know where I can get a replacement? It
has a creamy white flower with pink tinges and is quite striking.
