Re: Penstemons

I have Huskers Red in my garden. Over on the west side in the setting sun...
poor soil and root competition. I like the deep burgundy foliage during
winter and spring, but it goes mostly green when the heat arrives... just
before bloom time. Blooms are small but OK. There are several species of
Penstemon native to this area. Being interested in natives I grew 4 species
from seed for the nursery. Ended up dumping them. Could not give them away.
I doubt I ever sold more than one or two out of the whole lot. Have not
grown them since.
I can get some of the western species and hybrids with western parentage
to grow for a season or two and that is it. Mostly the first year in a
raised bed. Some people are successful growing them in pure sand. I have
never been *that* interested penstemon.
