HI Marsha,
school gardens - my favorite subject! Kids need gardens!
Sempervivums (aka hens and chicks) and low growing sedum are the first thing to pop in to my mind.
-
BUT - how about using interesting rocks - pieces of granite, quartz, shale, what is ever native to your area or interesting specimens from a wide range of places.
Have fun - I'd love to hear more about this project!
