I think you are going to have to patrol the bush. One year I noticed a large
number of caterpillars on a couple of dogwoods and tried to identify them.
The closest I could find were sawfly larvae. Anyway, I sprayed the bushes
with insecticide and that took care of them. This year the darn dogwoods
(red-twig and yellow twig) had a lot of die-back, but this was due to late
season drought last year. They are coming back in good shape (it was one way
to get me to prune; they needed it).
