Hi Isabelle,
You may be too far north for cardinal flower to do well (catskills?) Here in
Tennessee it is indeed everywhere, and even in my yard in Nashville which
turns into a brick in summer they are almost six feet tall. But when I lived
on the mountain (10 degrees cooler) what I noticed was that they spent the
winter underwater! Yes, the rosettes were growing in a creek bed that dries
out somewhat in summer and runs water over them all winter. My theory was
that that protected them from frost. And of course would be more moist in
summer. ??

I finally have time to do emails - worn out from yesterday & day before
moving an entire bed of iris and dayliles all at once. They had been grown
over by our trees and were not blooming so I had to move them into a new bed
in the sun. Imagine - the soil where I had to dig was rock hard even with
all the rain we've had this year!
