I do not know what happens to lobelias. For years I have had a large planting
of L. syphilitica, the species blue lobelia. It seeds freely here and I have
always had at least dozens of them, if not hundreds. This year only a few
plants are present.
In the hybrids, Ruby Slippers has survived. Shrimp Salad, a lovely creamy
pink, has disappeared after about five years. Grape Knee Hi does not persist. I
have a white one flowering right now, whose name I no longer recall.
But the evidence of the syphitica tells me that something happened this past
year that was not conducive to lobelias.
This is in Al Krismer's Cincinnati area.
