Tom, I'm glad you're making some headway with the ants. I used the bait suggested earlier and I think it may be working on the ants in my tree. With rains in the the last 30 days being heavier than any time since the 1940s, a few carpenter ants show up inside. On Thursday, I was told that cucumber slices discourage ants. I taped slices near both columns of medium sized black ants climbing up the exterior of our house, and one column has disappeared. The other column seems less populated.
