Hi Debb

This sounds like a liatris, an excellent cutflower, this is why I love this
plant
Does it flower from the top downwards?  This is one of the key things about
this plant as it is opposite of most other flowering spikes.  Could try a
wire 
hoop (old coat hanger) for support or just plain old use those cut flowers.
