Hi
I cut back my santolinias every spring very hard and they thrive. It is also
worth taking cuttings for new plants at the same time, as the plants do get
leggy after a few years however much you prune. I also often cut back late
spring early summer to tidy up the plants.
Sage I also prune in spring - but less vigourously - don't cut into the dead
wood in the centre of the plant or they might not reshoot as well.
Hope this helps!
