John,
Your miniature hosta garden sounds super! I've just started adding some of
the miniatures to my garden -- most of the hosta I have are the huge kind
-- and am really enjoying them.
I've had quite good germination on collected hosta seed. They don't
require a cold period and germinate in a couple of weeks at about 70F
(21C). In fact, I now have more baby hosta than I know what to do with
because I planted a *lot* of seeds, thinking germination would be poor!
They'll probably all be mongrel mutts, but I am enjoying watching them
grow. I think I'm even going to have a couple with the parent's gold
foliage. May be wishful thinking at this stage :-)
Should think you could grow them fine under lights and get them well
started for lining out next spring in some shady nursery bed or potting on.
They will put out 4 or 5 leaves (some less) during their first season, I
find, but stay quite small.... at least that's what mine are doing.
