Re: Patchouli

Nan -
I've never grown it - but would like to, after reading your message, as I am
addicted to scented plants!
I looked it up in my herb books however ;-
It is a tender perennial with oval leaves and white flowers ,marked with
violet, formed in spikes.
It likes rich moist soil and high humidity. Minimum temp 16 - 18C (61-64F)
Grows up to 3 feet (1m) high, best propogated by cuttings in spring or
division.
Also recommended that you pinch back regularly to encourage bushing out of
the plants.

Interestingly as well as being used in perfume and potpouri, it has some
medicinal uses (headache, nausea, abdominal pain, skin conditions) and is
used in aromatherapy (for depression, stress and low libido!!)
Apparently the perfume was popular in both the 1960's and the 1860's !
Look foward to hearing more about growing it - anyone know any suppliers in
UK?

Alison in North Wales UK
