Hi Patricia,
There are many perennials that will fit your needs. Hostas come in different
leaf colors, sizes (from minis to 3 ft high) and flower colors. They like
full shade to full sun (I have them in sun) and can be used just for the
foliage even though their flowers are really fragrant. Alchemilla mollis
(Lady's Mantle) has chartreuse colored leaves with yellow flowers late spring
to summer. Likes sun to partial shade, to 15 in. Coreopsis verticillata
(Moonbeam) grows up to 2 ft but very airy foliage with tiny yellow flowers.
Blooms June to frost and very pretty. Astilbe like shade, come in different
heights (12" to 5 ft plants) with plume flowers in different colors (white,
pink, purple, red). Heuchera sanguinea (Coral Bells), sun to partial shade,
comes in plants with green leaves or purple leaves. My favorite is Pewter
Moon, dark purple leaves streaked with silver with tiny white flowers. Nice
contrast against alchemilla mollis. The green leaved version has red or pink
flowers. Aquilegia canadenis (columbine) grows to 1 1/2 ft, blooms in
spring/early summer and likes partial shade. Sedum sieboldii (October Daphne)
grows 6-9" and blooms in fall (pink flowers). Dicentra (bleeding heart) 'Luxur
iant' only grows 12-18", likes partial shade and blooms spring to fall. For
something blue, veronica latifolium 'Crater Lake Blue', 12-18", partial
shade, late spring to midsummer.
Hopefully, this gives you some ideas. You might want to visit your local
nursery and ask them for ideas too. Good luck and keep us posted with what
you have decided to plant.
