Purchasing by catalog

I have a few questions about ordering from catalogs. I have always ordered
bulbs that way but this spring I ordered some perennials in 3" pots from
Garden Escape and some bare root from Gurney's. My experience was less than
wonderful.

The bare root stuff just didn't grow - I have no problem planting the same
stuff that has growth on it but almost nothing came up from bare root. I
have bought bare root at Price Club and they all came up. The heuchera from
Garden Escape did very well, but the campanula and the meadow rue look
sickly. For not much more money, I can go to my local nursery and but
plants that are very established and do well in my garden.

What are your favorite mail order providers? What is your experience with
the plants?

TIA!
