They won't tend to spread that far nor that fast. The crown of mine tend to
stay within a little more than a square foot.
However, some phlox tend to reseed easily. This can be a problem when the
original plant was a hybrid, but the offspring revert back to a true
species. For instance my original colorful plants died after one year, but
the soft white petalled offspring have survived for years. Though not as
spectacular a show they are still quite fragrant.
