Re: Datura/Brugmansia -Reply

Thank you Don, that's the word I was looking
for, Brugmansia. And your descriptions are
perfect. Whether or not these are being
confused with "moonflower" we'll have to wait
and see.

FYI - I haven't grown datura for 3-4 years and
STILL have seedlings show up in the area. I
live in 6b/7a, so they are not hardy here, but
apparently the seeds resurface periodically
anyway.

scientific name for either of them.

They used to all be called Datura, but are now
divided into Datura and
Brugmansia.

Brugmansia: Tree-like, with downward
facing/hanging flowers. Most common
genera grown are B. arborea, B. versicolor, and a
few others.

Datura: Bush like, with outward facing flowers.
 Most commonly grown are
D. meteloides (usually white flowers and fuzzy
leaves), D. metel (white,
purple or yellow, sometimes double and smooth
leaves) and D.stramonium (
the generally weedy jimson weed).
