Larkspur


Someone else asked a question  about larkspur, which I'm looking forward to
hearing the response to.  My question is a little different.  I love
larkspur in my garden, and would devote half of my limited space to it, if
I had better luck with it!  I'm in Zone 5 - upstate NY.  I too am curious
about putting seed out in the fall, or early spring, and seeing if that
works.  But I also start seeds indoors, they grew just fine, put them out
in the spring, they grew just fine, started producing flowers just fine
(although never as lush as the photos!), and then they just start withering
away.  This year, it seemed overnight they started withering at the base,
looking quite blighted, and then poof! they're dead.  It sort of worked
it's way down the row, starting at one end, now almost gotten all of them.
I'm not a newbie gardener, been doing this a while, and have great success
with most everything else.  But, just can't seem to get a grip on larkspur!
 I fertilize, water, etc.  Do they like neglect - like cosmos?  Do they
need a LOT of fertilizing, do they need a certain ph., etc...I'm thinking
if I broadcast in the fall, maybe it will grow hardier stock, that can
withstand the summer without dying out so quickly.  Any thoughts would be
appreciated.  Is it the brand perhaps.  I usually get my seeds from Park
Seeds.  Do Thomson & Morgan have better stock, or any others that have
better seeds?  I know with delphinium that the English delph seems to be
much lusher and hardier.  Is there a hardier brand of larkspur?  Sorry,
this message seems to have gotten quite long.  Thanks for reading it, and
