My elderly neighbor just knew "that's how you
do it," but I've since learned that, like poppies,
the seeds appreciate a cold or freezing period
for their germination. Makes sense!

On the subject of planting on Lincoln's
birthday, I remember from childhood
people believed that the edible type green peas
should be planted on
Lincoln's birthday. And I suppose they and
sweet peas are kin.
