From what I've read, tree roots can extend more than 2 to 4 times the
diameter of their canopies and can extend down as much as 7 feet, although
2 to 3 feet is more usual - most feeder roots being in the top 18" of soil.
I found some resources on roots on the web for my current series of
articles, but nothing that detailed the extent of systems by species. This
one does, however, describe the types of root systems and list a couple of
species for each. Might be of interest to you. URL is:

Well, my head is not only heat befuddled right now, but exhausted from a
long business trip....but will try to collect my thoughts and see if I can
recall some of them another day :-) The Eupatorium is one and it can get
pretty tall. I've had wild ones top 12', tho' my named cultivar is more
like 5' or 6'....they do like moist soil and sun.
