Got the same problem here! Unfortunately, the only sure-fire way I know
that works for me to keep grass out is to lay down a thick layer of
newspaper around a plant and cover with mulch. It doesn't help your
existing perennial clumps, however. And I find that no matter how thickly
I mulch an area, the grass with inevitably grow through even when no other
weeds will. Spraying for grass that's growing in the middle of a clump is
not feasible nor practical. I usually resort to hand-weeding -- a most
laborious chore in the heat of summer.
So, yes, I'm interested in knowing how to keep grass from growing in the
middle of existing perennial clumps, too.
