A lot of the plants considered "annuals" are in fact tender perennials.
(and this IS a perennial list, right?) Some of these include petunias,
impatiens, pelargoniums, begonias...
I've had good luck keeping them for more than one season. I haven't
tried the wave petunias specifically, but probably will this winter
since I have several. I usually cut them way back in the fall and move
them into the greenhouse. Right now I have some baskets of impatiens
that are several seasons old, although I didn't think they looked quite
as vigorous this year (could be the heat). I'm thinking I'll throw them
out this year and get new ones in the spring.
As for training the petunias to climb, I wouldn't think that would work
well. They don't have anything to cling with, and I haven't noticed
that they have any tendency to twine at all. But, hey, anything's worth
a try, right?
