I would go ahead and dig it up a section at a time. You will be able to
save most of the bulbs, and can probably tell the types of bulbs apart
(tulip or daffodil, crocus or hyacinth). Some bulb catalogs show
pictures of bulbs that may help.
If you have different varieties of daffodils, etc., the bulbs may be
larger or look different. You could plant them in different areas of the
bed if you thought combining them would cause a problem.
The easiest way to replant bulbs is to put them in the holes you dig for
the perennials (2-3 bulbs with a perennial plant.) That way you don't
have to dig separate holes, and won't feel as bad if they don't all come
back in the spring.
