Birth announcement

I am pleased to announce the birth of one stalk of tuberose blossoms. Her
name is Polly (as in Polianthes tuberosa) and she is beautiful. I've been
hoping she may have some cousins to play with soon but no sign yet of
stalks from the other bulbs in the pot. Those of you who have been on this
list a while may remember that I polled the membership at the end of last
year's growing season for advice on why they did not bloom last year. The
consensus was that they did not get enough heat in the ground. So this
year I started them in a clay pot indoors in early spring. When last
frost was past I set them out in the warmest place accessible and watched
them grow. No doubt this year's extreme heat has helped a lot. The stalk
has been in bud for a long time (literally weeks) but just started opening
around the end of last week.

My thanks to all who offered advice and encouragement. This meant a lot to
me and I feel really triumphant that the mother bulb has presented us with
at least one offspring.
