Dot-
I know nothing about the platycodon - this is the first year mine has stayed
alive through the summer - but your foxglove seeds you can sow now.
Personally I would sow them in peat pot - they are so tiny that they might be
hard to care for if directly sown. In my zone 9, I always plant my
Foxgloves, Hollyhocks, Delphiniums and Larkspur in the fall. For the most
part these stay close to the ground and aren't effected by a light frost.
One year we had temps down to 19-20 for 5 nights straight.......best blooming
spring I ever had. :o)
Dot - about your boug., well, in zone 9, I keep mine in the ground but it is
on the East side of our home, protected from the winter winds for the most
part. If there is a threat of frost of freeze I will load the base of the
plant with hay.....he has been in the ground for 4 years now--dies to the
ground every year and comes up singing each and every spring. I buy the hay
for Halloween decoration and then use it for winter protection.
Now - heated greenhouse...mine is only a 8 x 12. I have a portable heater
that I use during the winter...when the temp get's below 45-50 I turn it on.
My plants that are in big pots-----hibiscus, ferns, etc. I leave out until I
know the threat of frost or freeze then I haul them into the greenhouse -
can't walk into the greenhouse with all of the bigs pots so when the temps
are back at 75 degrees (within days) - I haul them back outside. By leaving
these plants out until frost or freeze they all go dormant and it appears
that I'm hauling dead plants in and out of the greenhouse - but I keep them
very lightly watered once they are dormant and they too come back singing in
the spring. During the winter (when not freezing) I keep these pots between
the back of the garage and the greenhouse, which I guess acts as a
micro-climate.
Good luck and happy gardening
